Maxim Poleacov , “
Kholodets Publishing House
”, artist talk & workshop
15 January 2026, 18:00
Domaći kholodets can be translated from an interslavic incarnation as homemade aspic. By unpacking the references and meanings within this meta-linguistic construction, Maksim Poleacov in collaboration with Luiza Sim explores the central word Dom, which carries two coexisting meanings: home and house.
In the workshop, cooking kholodets becomes a metaphor. Instead of meat and bones, artists use houses as the main ingredients. One example is Plattenbau, also known as Panelka—an embodiment of the largest social housing project. Built on an industrial, assembly-line scale, it fulfills basic human needs by offering a place for everyday life and celebrations of Christmas - New Year - Christmas again - and the Old New Year. Within these buildings, people have their own kitchens where they can cook kholodets with their families. But what if kholodets were no longer a dish at all, but instead a publishing house?

Maxim Poleacov was born in Tiraspol and currently works in Chisinau (Moldova) as cultural operator, publisher, organizer and coordinator of 3rd Space Studio — communal workshop for diverse practices related to DIY Printed Matter. Maxim's current research focuses on methodologies for ‘samizdat’ (low-run self-publishing), and approaches this practice primarily not in the way of object fetisization, but as a platform to build and develop conversations, social situations, and communication spaces. Examples include grassroots editorial experiments and distribution centers, open studios and temporary services such as pop-up cafes or libraries. He examines how publishing becomes a means of communication and a tool for organizing collectives.
Luiza Sim is an interdisciplinary designer and artist born in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. Currently lives and studies Integrated Design at the University of Arts in Bremen.
Luiza works in an integrative field where traditional craft practices such as woodcut, bookmaking, analog photography - intertwine with digital media, graphic design, and creative technologies. She uses this synthesis as an instrument to open up a broad space for research, experimentation and the exploration of new forms of visual art.
The residency is supported by ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen).
