BERLIN, WING WING, UPCOMING




WING WING is full of winged creatures: angels soaring through the dense air that is becoming increasingly hard to breathe, and those who have fallen under the weight of politics: identities and empires. It is packed with monsters: dragons with broken hearts and those with multiple heads, which do not increase their wisdom but rather multiply their vices.

Drawing on the allegorical potential of anthropomorphism and traditions of ritual, folklore, mysticism, and political symbolism, performers embody animals and objects that talk, reason, and make choices—revealing the wild, unpredictable, and subversive aspects of human behavior.  By foregrounding queer perspectives, body politics, and transnational experiences, WING WING gives visibility to voices that disrupt normative frameworks and cultivates spaces for dialogue across differences.  At times, the works slip into a knowingly playful register, using grotesque exaggeration to spark flashes of magical realism and sly, irreverent humor that deepens rather than dilutes their critical edge.

WING WING program at Pickle Bar investigating politics as a form of contemporary mythology, where narratives of power and identity are performed, exaggerated, and reimagined. Through the language of drag, persona, and monstrous embodiment, it reveals how social and political realities can be both exposed and transformed through acts of performance and metamorphosis.  If magical thinking is an attempt to enchant the reality we live in, perhaps it is performance—queer, grotesque, tender, and winged—that casts its spell on the hostile world with a wink.
